Will Pomerantz has recently developed plays for The Public Theatre (A FREE MAN OF COLOR by John Guare and THE GOD BOTHERERS by Richard Bean), Playwrights Horizons (AFTERDARK, by Kara Manning), Hartford Stage (SPLITTING INFINITY by Jamie Pachino), New York Theatre Workshop (GLOW by Ed Bok Lee), Ensemble Studio Theatre (LUMINESCENCE DATING by Carey Perloff) and Cocteau Rep (CRIME AND PUNISHMENT by Curt Columbus).
He has directed for and been associated with such organizations as The Signature Theatre, The Williamstown Theatre Festival, The Denver Center, The Mark Taper Forum, The Pittsburgh Public, The Studio Theatre and Soho Rep. He has directed world premiere productions by such writers as John Guare, Julia Jordan, Sung Rno, Norman Allen, Kira Obolensky, and Gordon Dahlquist. In addition to his work on new plays, Will has also directed texts by Chekhov, Ibsen, Strindberg, Wedekind, Shakespeare, Shaw and Sophocles.
His production of THE SHAPE OF THINGS was voted Outstanding Production of 2003 Washington, DC by Metro Weekly. It also made the top 10 lists of The Washington Post and Washington Times. He also received an OOBR Outstanding Production Award for A TALE OF TWO CITIES, and has had his work cited as a “Critic’s Pick” (TimeOut New York) and a “Voice Choice” (The Village Voice).
Will Pomerantz is the first American director ever invited to direct for The National Theatre of Poland, where his production of CINDERS by Janucz Glowacki is currently in its second year of performances in Warsaw. Will was the Boris Sagal Fellow in Directing for The Williamstown Theatre Festival, the Staff Repertory Director for The Acting Company, and is an alumnus of The Director’s Lab at Lincoln Center, as well as an artist member of New York Theatre Workshop.
Mr. Pomerantz is currently Director-In Residence for The Culture Project at 45 Bleecker (producers of The Exonerated, Guantanamo and Sara Jone’s Bridge and Tunnel) and his productions there have included TATJANA IN COLOR, PRATER VIOLET, SPRING AWAKENING, THE 5:48, and A TALE OF TWO CITIES.
He has been a guest artist for The Juilliard School (4 seasons), The National Theatre Conservatory at The Denver Center, The Purchase College Conservatory Program, The Atlantic Theatre Company School, Bard College, and Cornell University.
WILL POMERANTZ (Director, Choreographer)
Will Pomerantz has directed and choreographed classic American musicals, and has worked on new musicals at all stages of development. His work on new musicals has been seen at The New York Music Theatre Festival (THE BLUE FLOWER by Jim and Ruth Bauer), The National Association of Music Theatre Presenters (THE ENCHANTED COTTAGE by Kim Oler, Alison Hubbard and Tom West and CUPID AND PSYCHE by Sean Hartley and Jihwan Kim), Paulette Hauptt’s Premieres Company (UNLOCK'D by Sam Carner and Derek Gregor) and for New York Theatre Workshop (THE CURE by Mark Weiser). Will also staged the workshop production of CUPID AND PSYCHE for The Village Theatre’s Village Originals Series. He has directed such music theatre performers as Emily Skinner, Michael Hayden, John Jellison, Annie Golden, Amanda Serkasevich and John Bolton.
Will’s new works for TheatreworksUSA include FIRST IN FLIGHT by David and Joe Zellnik, and JASON AND THE GOLDEN FLEECE by Art Perleman and Jeff London. The productions played in New York, as well as on national tour. He is currently developing a new musical by Mark St. Germaine and Randy Courts based on the Dr. Dolittle books by Hugh Lofting, which will play at The Lucille Lortell in the 2006-2007 season. His production of GREAT EXPECTATIONS will be seen at the Lortell in the 2005-2006 season.
Will is the co-librettist and director of BONNIE AND CLYDE, for which he has staged readings at The Culture Project and The Blue Heron Theatre. The piece was recently licensed for performance by Summer Wind Productions.
His work has been seen at The Public Theatre, Hartford Stage, The Studio Theatre, Williamstown Theatre Festival, Primary Stages and The Culture Project, where he is Director-In-Residence. Will is a graduate of Cornell University, and received his Master’s in Directing from Carnegie Mellon, where he received the Steven Bochco Scholarship in Directing, as well as a Jacob Javitz Fellowship. He has also studied at New York University under Zelda Fichandler and Liviu Ciulei.
